S. ATHALYE is closely associated with the
Plastics Industry, since his return from the U.S.A.
in 1960 after studying Plastics Engineering and working
with Dow Chemicals Co. at Midland, Michigan, U.S.A.
in their Quality Control & Technical Service Labs.
Related to Polystyrene and ABS.
He has worked as Manager, Technical
Services of Polychem Ltd. and Hoechst Dyes and Chemicals
Ltd. between 1960-65and 1965-72 respectively for Styron Polystyrenes
and Hostalen HDPE.
He worked between 1972 and
1982 as a Project Manager with the Thakersey Group for
Diversification and New Investments covering in-house
production of a variety of products related to Textiles,
Pigments and Plastics. During this period, he was Director
of various Group Companies as well as those in the Dilip
Piramal Group including Blow Plast Ltd. He also established
CSIR recognized R & D Centre for the Thackersey
Group, where most of the new products were developed.
Since, 1982, he has been working as a Projects Consultant
in the field of Plastics and Packaging. His Consultancy
Firm, Technology Transfer Pvt. Ltd., have so far successfully
serviced 68 clients for various Projects, many of which
were for the first time in the country. The Group also
specializes in Technical Audit and Turn-around of Processing
and Conversion Units in the field of Plastics and Packaging.
He is a fellow of the Plastics and Rubber Institute,
U.K.; The Institute of Materials, U.K.: Indian Standards
Institution (Now known as Bureau of Indian Standards);
Institute of Standards Engineers, India. He is a senior
member of Society of Plastics Engineers Inc., U.S.A.
since 1960.
His Professional Activities cover Chairman - Plastics
& Rubber Institute, Mumbai and Pune Centres; Hon.
Secretary, PRI, Indian Section; Chairman of two ISI
sub-committees, mainly dealing with Plastics Packaging;
Vice-Chairman, Western Region, Institute of Marketing
and Management; Faculty Member of SBM Polytechnic and
Indian Institute of Packaging; Member of the Governing
Council of AIPMA, SBM Polytechnic and Indian Institute
of Packaging; Hon. Editor of Popular Plastics and Packaging,
a monthly journal. He has so far published 9 Technical
Books, most of them now in II and III Editions, over
80 Technical Papers on various aspects of Plastics Processing
and Usage.
He is widely travelled and is a frequent traveller to
overseas countries to keep himself abreast of the latest
trends and developments in the field of polymers, processing
techniques and new products.
